FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - The mayor of Florence is planning to launch a new program to address homelessness in the city.
This plan is one of several campaign goals Mayor Andy Betterton laid out when he took office six months ago.
Mayor Betterton made the transition from city councilman to mayor in the middle of the pandemic. He describes the last six months in one word: busy!

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) - The UK variant of COVID-19 was discovered in Alabama this week and a South African variant of the virus was found in South Carolina just today.
Both of these virus strains are even more infectious.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – The mayors of at least four Alabama cities have been diagnosed with COVID-19 as the illness spreads rapidly across the state following the holidays. The city of Birmingham said Mayor Randall Woodfin was admitted to a hospital with COVID-19 pneumonia on Monday, five days after announcing he tested positive for the new coronavirus. Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling says he was quarantining at home after tested positive for the virus. And the city of Auburn says Mayor Ron Anders is in quarantine after testing positive. Florence Mayor Andy Betterton also has tested positive.
