You may not be familiar with the term. Historically, the term “carpetbagging” arose as a pejorative used by Southerners to describe opportunistic Northerners who came to the Southern states after the American Civil War, and were perceived to be exploiting the local populace.
Born of opportunities created in the aftermath of the Civil War, modern day carpetbaggers are simply opportunistic and voters no longer seem to care anymore about unrooted candidates.
