South Beloit voters will decide whether to eliminate open burning

SOUTH BELOIT  When voters return to the polls next month, they will see a non-binding ballot question about open yard waste burning. The South Beloit City Council approved in November a 4-1 vote placing the advisory question on the April 6 election ballot. “A ‘yes’ vote would mean there would be no open burning,” Commissioner Ryan Adleman told the Register Star. “The next step for the city would be having to work with Rock River Disposal to dispose of yard waste with the garbage pickup.  “Because it’s an advisory (referendum) we don’t have it formally finalized, but I would imagine there would be costs involved, either on a sewer bill or with a yard waste bill to accommodate the pickup.”

Rockford Girl Scouts troop sells cookies through Grubhub

ROCKFORD Nationally, Girl Scouts cookie sales are down due to the pandemic. However, one local troop has found a way to still meet their goals. Although last year they had to cut sales short because of COVID-19, this year things look more promising, said Holly Bartelt, chief revenue and brand officer at Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois. There has been a bigger push with online sales compared to the traditional door-to-door, and last Friday the organization kicked off a partnership with the food delivery service Grubhub. Girl Scouts USA has partnered with the company. In Rockford, Grubhub will accept weekend orders through March 21. The organization also is working with troops in Oswego, Lake Zurich and South Elgin.
