Once poll symbol allotted, it cannot be changed: Navataram Party

Tirupati : , April 6 (IANS) Ravu Subrahmanyam, founder of the Navataram Party, which has been allotted the glass tumbler symbol for the Tirupati bypoll by the Election Commission, on Tuesday said once a symbol has been allotted it cannot be revoked. Once Form 7A has been given, there is no objection raised on the party symbol. The decision of the returning officer is final, Subrahmanyam told IANS.
However, Andhra Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jana Sena Party (JSP) leaders have objected to the allotment of the glass tumbler election symbol to Navataram Party, alleging that it has been deliberately done to confuse voters in the forthcoming Tirupati bypoll .

Retired bureaucrat Nilam Sawhney assumed office of Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner on Thursday. She had served as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh till December 2020.
The State government sent names of three retired IAS officers to Governor Biswa Bushan Harichandan. The Governor appointed Ms. Sawhney as the SEC.
Ms. Sawhney, a 1984 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre, was supposed to superannuate on June 30, 2020, but she got an extension as the Chief Secretary. She was the first woman chief secretary in AP. Now, she will be the first woman SEC.

Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner N. Ramesh Kumar on Sunday said he would sympathetically consider requests by candidates, who claimed to have withdrawn their nominations for elections to urban local bodies (ULBs) under pressure, to allow them to enter the fray.
The commission would try to give such candidates the benefit of the doubt subject to reports by District Collectors.
Mr. Kumar said the requests by some candidates to permit them to contest the elections in spite of the rejection of their nominations during scrutiny and similar requests by those who did not file nominations in the stipulated time, would be given due consideration but only within the framework of the election law.
