Fighters fight a brush fire on Yerba Buena Island next to the bay bridge, both by land and by sea. The location, terrain and winds all made it challenging for crews to get the upper hand. The hydrants are on the north side of the bridge. The fire was on the south side, and theres only one way to get our hoses across and unfortunately we had to inconvenience everyone to stop this fire where we did. At one point, the eastbound portion of the bridge was completely shut down for more than an hour, backing up traffic for miles. Good evening. On this saturday, im cristina rendon. Firefighters were called to Yerba Buena Island after drivers on the bay bridge reported smoke at about 230 this afternoon. The brush fire broke out on the island just south of the bridge. Crews working using fireboats in their work against the flames, and the Fire Department says crews on the ground had to break through a fence to access fire hydrants on the north side of the bridge and run a hose across interstate
