County s delay killed anti-CWD deer culling request - Winona Post > Article

(4/2/2021)   Although there were still public commenters debating it during a Winona County Board meeting late last month, in a practical sense the deer culling issue is dead at least for this year. County officials said the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) withdrew its request to cull deer on the county property known as Stone Point Park, a former landfill. The County Board had simply taken too long to decide whether to allow it. Having largely completed its deer culling program everywhere else in the state, the DNR’s time sensitive request to Winona County became moot, even as board members debated for months on the issue.

County delays deer culling decision, again - Winona Post > Article

County delays deer culling decision, again (3/10/2021)   Opponents and proponents locked antlers Tuesday over a possible Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) deer culling at the former landfill at Stone Point Park.  In February, the Winona County Board had voted to table until its meeting Tuesday the issue of whether to allow DNR deer culling at the county-owned land there to combat chronic wasting disease (CWD). DNR culling proceeded on private land elsewhere in the county.  On Tuesday, a vote to deny the DNR access failed 2-3, and the County Board tabled the issue a second time until the next meeting March 23. However, Erik Hildebrand of the DNR said the agency plans to end its statewide deer-culling program three days later, on March 26. Hildebrand’s predecessor, Todd Froberg, said in an earlier interview the DNR cuts off the cull before the spring in part because they want to avoid shooting does while the deer are pregnant with fawns

County should help, not hinder, CWD management - Winona Post > Article

County should help, not hinder, CWD management (2/15/2021)   As the at-large member of the public on the Board of Animal Health Farmed Cervid Advisory Committee, I was extremely concerned that our county commissioners’ failed to cooperate with the DNR to continue in the DNR s attempts to assess the severity of chronic wasting disease (CWD) by taking whitetail deer to sample on county property. While every individual may not be aware that CWD is a highly contagious, fatal, neurological disease that can be spread through deer, elk, soil, plants and water, the DNR has presented to the County Board for the past few years to keep that group informed.
