This 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series Costs More Than a GT Black Series 3 Jun 2021, 11:12 UTC ·

Even though it’s 12 years older and far less technologized, the SL 65 AMG Black Series we’re covering today is rarer and more expensive to boot. A fixed-head coupe rather than a hard-topped roadster as you would expect from a Super Leicht, chassis number WDBSK79F89F158095 is one of 350 units delivered worldwide, of which 175 units landed in the U.S.A.
Offered on Hemmings by a dealership from Miami, the Steel Gray-painted land missile is offered at $397,500, although the first owner paid $304,350 all those years ago. Not only is the SL 65 AMG Black Series collectible, but this particular example is a low-mileage car with tons of documentation.
Mercedes-Benz hasn’t announced the pricing details for the all-new seventh-generation S-Class in America. But we all know it’ll cost more than an arm and a leg considering that at home in Germany, it starts from at least €108,635.10 ($132,340). So, if you don’t mind going back a couple of generations, you could save a chunk full of cash and upgrade to the raspy soundtrack of a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 to go along with the plush comfort and the limo atmosphere.

Even in this diverse lineup, though, you can’t find every single body style available for a family of cars the Germans are making due to the particularities of the U.S. market. There s one exception, though: the E-Class.
The mid-range Mercedes machine is present in the United States in all four traditional body styles: sedan, wagon, coupe, and cabriolet. There’s even an SUV equivalent, the GLE, in both normal and coupe guises, but that’s a topic for another time.
Back to the E-Class, this family is offered in both Benz and AMG-refined flavors, and given how we’ve dedicated this June to the German performance brand, we’ll of course focus on the AMG side of things, as we’ve already done with the A- and C-Class the previous days.
Born in the fiery crucible of the Affalterbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany headquarters, the 4.0-liter V8 engine sitting inside many of the Mercedes-AMG creations is clearly a work of art. A sensible one, though, as proven by a Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ 4-Door Coupe that features a few tasty (but heavy) upgrades.
Although we’re very much saddened by the current fall into oblivion of the roadster market mainly due to the craze for crossovers, SUVs, or trucks, it’s also true that this trend comes with benefits—such as the option to snatch a 415-hp roadster at a decidedly fair price.
