It took place on this ground at gettysburg. Three days of violence, three days of carnage, 50,000 casualties wounded, captured, missing, or dead over three days of fighting. When the sun rose on that independence day, lee would retreat. The war would go on for nearly two more years. But the back of the confederacy had been broken. The union would be saved. Slavery would be abolished. The government of, by, and for the people would not perish from the earth and freedom would be born anew in our land. Theres no more fitting place than here today in gettysburg to talk about the cost of division, about how much it has cost

The first one i want to look at that i think gives you a gut sense of what he was thinking about at the time, what he was thinking of about america and what he thinks about when he thinks about the american government, its a memo that he wrote right after the constitutional convention. And leading up to it for a while, he had been one of the nations new leading nationalists, one of the earliest voices and loudest voices saying we need a stronger government. We need a stronger government. He was out there chiming away for this. You finally get the constitutional convention. You would think that hamilton would be like, yes, finally, we have a new constitution. Ive been wanting this all along and now finally were here. Okay. So to know what hes thinking, its a memo after the convention, he goes home and in a very lawyerly kind of way he sits down at his desk and says, what do you think is going to happen next . A

So sometimes its a case of case of spotlighting places that are only known locally. Im bringing in more people from outside so they know about it. In general that is a concern. In terms of cultural sensitivity , absolutely this is a big concern of ours after we never want to point to something to say thats weird, what are these people doing. We include things in the book because we want to celebrate them. We want to show i get a sense of what is out there the world. One of the prime reasons press doing this is how do people see the world. What perspectives can we view this from. So that was definitely something we thought about in terms of the language and tone we are using. Speaking to people who are part of these groups anywhere in these museums. That trying to to represent them without talking to them. I mean even the concept of exploration and discovery is a li
