Global Times newspaper claimed, following his death at 91.
The Chinese Communist Party credits Yuan with the invention of “hybrid rice,” genetically altered varieties of the grain that grow faster and more abundantly, helping shepherd China out of the mass starvation of the Mao Zedong era. Under the communist leaders’ Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution campaigns, historians estimate that as many as 45 million died, many of them of starvation.

China National Space Administration announced Thursday morning that the Long March-5B Y2 rocket lifted off in the southern province of Hainan with the core capsule of the new Tiangong space station.

On Wednesday, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) forces stalked the U.S. Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn as it sailed through the Taiwan Straits. Chinese officials said PLA forces threatened to respond to any provocations or threats posed by the U.S. warship.
