US: Digital investments pay off for Albertsons
Surging online grocery sales lifted Albertsons Companies to stronger-than-expected earnings during the third quarter. For the period ended December 5, same-store sales at Albertsons grew 12.3% on the strength of digital sales, which skyrocketed 225%. Albertsons said it has spent approximately $1.1bln in capital expenditures, which included accelerated investment in digital and technology initiatives, during the first 40 weeks of fiscal 2020.
US: Walmart offers new form of grocery delivery
Walmart is bringing some new sophistication to grocery delivery. Beginning this spring, participating customers in Bentonville, Arkansas, will be able to receive deliveries from their local Walmart directly into a temperature-controlled HomeValet-powered smart box placed outside their home, according to Tom Ward, SVP of customer product, Walmart U.S.

Either way, this will continue to loom over the country as the transition closes in, and the tech world as it attempts to focus on things like CES next week.
Six years after launching Amazon Pantry, Amazon has discontinued the popular service.
Originally known as Prime Pantry, the option initially charged customers in the continental US a flat $5.99 shipping fee for a box that could be filled with up to 45 pounds of nonperishable groceries and household goods.
It had begun as an alternative to the traditional supermarket but had started to compete with other Amazon offerings - the Jeff Bezos-owned firm took over Whole Foods and launched its own Amazon Fresh grocery stores.
Amazon is still selling canned goods, pasta, cereal, detergent and other staples through the main Prime website.

Prime Pantry closed on Wednesday, but customers can still order food and household items through Amazon s main page.
The program was launched in 2014 and was initially offered to members of the Prime free shipping program. But in 2018, Amazon added a $5 monthly subscription fee.
Since launching the program in 2014 Amazon has expanded into the household goods market, with programs like Amazon Fresh for groceries and with the company s acquisition of Whole Foods Market.
