Amazon Web Services Inc. has just added a new service, called Amazon Location Service, to its cloud offerings to help customers with location-based needs.
“Amazon Location Service is a new geospatial service that makes it easy for customers on AWS to integrate location information into their applications,” said Andre Dufour (pictured), General Manager, Amazon Location Service, AWS. “One of the things that’s really cool about Amazon Location is we enable customers to access this high-quality data in a way that’s incredibly cost effective. It’s up to 10 times cheaper than some of the alternatives.”
Dufour spoke with Rebecca Knight, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed Amazon Location Services and uses cases the demonstrate how customers are leveraging this new service.

AWS has claimed its upcoming Amazon Location Service for developers building mapping and geographic features into applications is priced at a fraction of common alternatives, presumably aiming squarely at a company whose name rhymes with schmoogle.
Developers use mapping and location APIs for things as simple as showing a map on a website, or more complex routing or geographical analysis. Many mobile applications interact with location data for marketing, customisation, and alerts. Timetable applications query location to inform users of the next service from the nearest stop. There are countless use cases.

Introducing Amazon Location Service
Today we are making Amazon Location available in preview form and you can start using it today. Priced at a fraction of common alternatives, Amazon Location Service gives you access to maps and location-based services from multiple providers on an economical, pay-as-you-go basis.
You can use Amazon Location Service to build applications that know where they are and respond accordingly. You can display maps, validate addresses, perform geocoding (turn an address into a location), track the movement of packages and devices, and much more. You can easily set up geofences and receive notifications when tracked items enter or leave a geofenced area. You can even overlay your own data on the map while retaining full control.
