Two days, Feb. 13-14, were designated as “Global Disinvestment Day,” to demand that governments, universities, financial institutions, religious organizations and other entities divest their holdings of fossil fuel companies. At over 450 events in 60 countries, activists demanded that society stop investing in the “rogue” industries (e.g., oil, natural gas and coal) and fight to “de-legitimize the fossil fuel industry.”

Bengal should not be a party to the national degeneration by choosing to be governed bycentral leaders instead of the local ones as that would strengthen the concentration of power in the hands of those whose record on economic policy and social justice are seriously defective , Nobel laureate Amartya Sen said.

In the latest row over illegal land grab in the Visva-Bharati, the varsity has accused Nobel laureate and eminent economist Prof Amartya Sen of wrongly occupying the land on the campus. In a letter written to the West Bengal government, Visva Bharati has contested that a number of plots present on the varsity have been erroneously recorded to favour private parties including Prof Amartya Sen.
