SPR s Doug Nadvornick reports.
One of the ripples from Washington moving back into Phase 2 of its coronavirus reopening plan is that libraries are allowed to reopen their doors to customers.
Many in eastern Washington have already done that. Spokane’s two library systems are getting there.
Libraries have become an important place, not just for finding books, but also for free computer access for people who don’t have it at home. In that spirit, on Tuesday, the Spokane city library system will open its doors and allow a few people to come in at a time to use the library’s computers.
Robert “Bob” A. Kneeland.
Former Newton, N.H., postmaster, who later retired as superintendent of the Ward Hill Post office Robert “Bob” A. Kneeland, 92, of Bradford, died Thursday morning, Jan. 28 at High Pointe House in Haverhill.
He was born in Haverhill July 26, 1928, to the late Richmond R. and Jennie (née Dufault) Kneeland.
A life-long resident of Bradford, Kneeland was educated in the Haverhill school system, graduating from Haverhill High School with the class of 1946 while enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps School as a Hospital Apprentice 1st class Corpsman, serving as an enlisted member of a military medical unit until Aug.2, 1946. After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy on Feb. 17, 1949, Kneeland attended Merrimack College.
The future is undoubtedly bright for the Spokane Public Library, but the new year will bring continued uncertainty.
The pandemic will continue to limit the library’s services for the foreseeable future, but officials also expect to complete the renovation of the Shadle Branch and construction of The Hive, a new building on E. Sprague and S. Haven, in 2021.
“We’re excited about that for sure, but it is certainly a challenge to navigate through the pandemic at the same time as navigating through the construction and opening of these facilities,” Library Director Andrew Chanse told The Spokesman-Review Wednesday.
If the mayor’s proposed 2021 budget is approved by the Spokane City Council on Monday, the Library Fund would be set at $10.7 million, down from the $10.8 million in 2020.

Cape Breton Search and Rescue members are briefed on what to expect for an on-foot exercise in Sydney, N.S.(Submitted by Amanda Donovan)
Cape Breton Search and Rescue says specialized training will help them find people who might not respond to searcher calls.
The group of volunteers gathered in Sydney, N.S., last week on the anniversary of the disappearance of seven-year-old James Delorey.
The boy, who had autism, wandered away from his South Bar home on Dec. 5, 2009. Delorey was found two days after he went missing, huddled in thick brush about a kilometre from his home. He died the following day in hospital after suffering from severe hypothermia.
