1956 - Elvis Presley s breakout hit Heartbreak Hotel goes to #1 in America. A couple of sources of inspiration or the song: A newspaper story about a man who killed himself and left behind a note saying only, I walk a lonely street. And, the writings Alvin Krolik, made news when he turned himself in to police in 1953 following a crime spree. A passage from his unpublished memoir was mentioned in some stories:

The track was released on August 20, 1955, making Elvis 20-years-old, and quickly went to the top of the country and western charts.
However, others would say this chart is not the official, overall top singles chart, as it instead focuses only on one genre.
Elvis first single to get to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, the chart which goes across genres, was Heartbreak Hotel, which was released on January 27, 1956 - making Elvis 21-years-old.
The song was written by high school teacher Mae Boren Axton and singer-songwriter Tommy Durden and is based on a newspaper article which described the suicide of a man who jumped from a hotel window.
