Last year, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County launched Alternatives to Violence, a program that works with community members to bring peace to areas prone to violence. The program uses "violence interrupters," trained members of the community who have experienced the criminal justice system firsthand, to make connections and address problems without involving the police. Its focus has been on the Beatties Ford Road corridor in west Charlotte.
