30 of them, but there were 149 republicans who voted yes for this bill. that s an overwhelming number, and then you add in the other 170 some democrats who voted for it, and you re seeing a bill pass the united states house of representatives with 300 votes. that s something that in the modern congress, in this age of hyper partisanship that we never see happen with a relatively controversial piece of legislation. so if anything, i think kevin mccarthy has proven his critics wrong. he s been able to marshal all of these different factions to get a very difficult piece of legislation to the united states senate and perhaps to the president s desk, and yes, even one member could say kevin mccarthy, we want to call your speakership into question, bring up a vote, and they ll go through that whole process again, but it will likely end up the same way that it did in january. because while these conservatives may not be happy with kevin mccarthy, they do not have an alternative speaker candi
strategy at this point would be for kevin mccarthy to step down. there isn t enough negotiating room right now that could happen, i think, in that short of a period of time that would lead to him becoming the next speaker or an alternative speaker to be placed in. i think that they re still too pretty far apart on a lot of these issues. we re still at the staring contest point in these negotiations. one of the things i specifically asked him is like how long are you willing to hold out, and he kind of laughed at that. he was like this is only day two, even the ground hog day movie was ten days long before bill murray started to lose it. that seems to me to be a pretty entrenched posture, and donald s kind of shrugged off the criticism that there isn t now a functioning house of representatives in the event of a national security incident.
