Per news station KWCH, the FBI has ruled the 2004 death of Alonzo Brooks to be a homicide.
As part of the continued federal investigation, his body was exhumed and transported to Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware. His body was examined by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner. The examiner’s report concludes that the cause of death was homicide.
“We knew that Alonzo Brooks died under very suspicious circumstances,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Duston Slinkard. “This new examination by a team of the world’s best forensic pathologists and experts establishes it was no accident. Alonzo Brooks was killed. We are doing everything we can, and will spare no resources, to bring those responsible to justice.”
On May 1, 2004, Brooks body was found in a creek in La Cygne, Kansas, few weeks after he attended a party at a farmhouse on the outskirts of the rural town. According to federal authorities, Brooks attended the party with friends. He was one of three Black men in attendance at the party of more than 100 people. Authorities reported that his friends left the party before him, leaving Brooks without a ride home. He went missing the following day.
Brooks was later found on a pile of brush and branches in a creek by a group of his family and friends. An autopsy at the time could not zero in on his cause of death. In 2019, the FBI reopened Brooks case which was featured on an episode of Netflix s Unsolved Mysteries reboot and a few months later, they offered a $100,000 reward for information about his death.
