Welcome to inside story. Im ray suarez. 95 years ago today, tennessee ratified the 19th amendment to the u. S. Constitution. Clearing the way for women to vote. It would be half a century before a similar guarantee was given to africanamericans. For decades, some states barred entry to the ballot box. Intimidation, threats, burdens, poll taxes, tricky application procedures were on the benign end. The threat of sudden violence, murder was at the other end of the scale. Now, 50 years later, plenty of americans are prepared to let the guarantees of the voting right acts from the one it was in 1995. Randall pinkston has more. This act flows from a clear and simple wrong. Its only purpose is to right that wrong. When president Lyndon Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights abbing. He called it a monumental law. This is Al Jazeera America, good morning and live from new york city, im Randall Pinkston, a kentucky clerk who refuses to issue marriage licenses because of her religious beliefs faces a judge today, kim davis and her staff will appear in federal court to face contempt charges for davis continued defiance of the law, she refuses to issue licenses to anyone to avoid giving them to gay couples and we have more at the woman at the center of the controversy. Kim davis is hoping this federal judge will delay that court order so she can appeal a decision relating to an injunction that the governor filed. Kim davis has been the center of controversy for many weeks here and to some she has become sort of a hero in rowan county. [chanting] before kim davis was at the epicenter of the battle over same sex marriage [chanting] she led a life of little notoriety, elected official who followed in her mothers footsteps ran rowan, kentucky Clerks Office and people go to her for records and licenses.

Germany announced it has the ability to take in half a million Asylum Seekers each year for several years to come. Germany expects to receive 800,000 people this year alone. That is four times higher than its 2014 total. Germany has been insisting other european nations take in their fair share of refugees, as well. We are live in vienna, where thousands of refugees have been arriving. Weve seen you on the train, at the train station as they have streamed into that country. Describe how they are being treated in austria. Every man, woman and child refugee that i have spoken with has said they are being treated very humanely here in austria since they arrived in vienna. Today three undecided senators announce their support. Libby casey is live for us. This appears to be a major victory. It is. 41 is the magic number they hope to reach. An attempt to get a vote through. Now republicans of course, want to vote on a disapproval resolution to reject the deal over Irans Nuclear weapon. And this filibuster would prevent the vote from getting to the floor. It also prevents a bill of disapproval getting to the president s desk. And they are hoping to avoided a messy veto process. Just because they have this magic number 41, doesnt mean will it be entirely smooth sailing. We dont know if every one of those democrats will indeed vote to filibuster. It is great news for the president s agenda randall, 41 is the magic number and 41 democrats as of this morning have come out supporting the white house deal. Now, that means that the democrats have enough senators on their team that they can filibuster republican attempts to take a vote. Republicans of course want to vote on a disapproval resolution.
