DOS PALOS, Calif. In the fertile fields of South Dos Palos, a small cloud of dust follows a tractor working the land near the Merced and Fresno county line.
The soil must be prepared in such a way that water can flood the field without any high or low spots. While all this is happening, the roar of a distant plane get closer and closer until at just the right moment, millions of rice seeds are dropped from the belly of the plane.
Bonnie Clark, a professor of archaeology at the University of Denver has researched the Amache site, concentrating on gardens and agriculture. As many of the Americans relocated to Amache came from the Central Valley of California and had expertise in farming, harvesting, and nursery work, the surrounding farmers did benefit from having the opportunity to hire workers. Thousands of work permits were granted annually, and Clark said at any one time, a quarter of those living in the camp were away working on area farms and ranches. The internees at Amache played a role in harvesting the 1942 sugar beet crop, some as hired labor and others as volunteers who understood the gravity of the need for harvest labor. In her research, Clark said she read letters from the Granada community and the Prowers County Commissioners thanking the Amache farmers for helping their fellow farmers bring in the harvest.

It’s no secret that private land conservation requires means. Be it grant awards, individual donations or earned income. For the hundreds of local and regional land trusts that lack significant endowments, conserving a piece of property very often necessitates a motivated landowner with the resources to make a donation of development rights, fee title or stewardship endowment.
While more public funding sources have emerged recently for conservation finance, particularly around working farms, landowners with means and motivation remain a staple of the private conservation process. These landowners are largely white, and their properties most often in rural and suburban areas. The distribution of conserved land and public open space has followed suit, with low-income communities and communities of color markedly deprived
