…Says you fought colonial masters, military rule, you’ve to deepen democracy By Clifford Ndujihe, Politics Editor VICE President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN; former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; Publisher of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Sam Amuka; and a cream of captains of the media industry, yesterday, celebrated nine media icons, who passed on, recently. Showering torrents of tributes on the deceased icons, the Vice president and the leaders said the late media pillars charted a course that journalists must thread to turn the fortunes of the country around. Specifically, Osinbajo, who delivered the keynote address, noted that the media fought for independence, and against military rule, adding that now that Nigeria is at a defining moment, the mainstream media must fight fake news, keep elected leaders on their toes and deepen democracy.

There were quite a number of newspaper adverts by successful men and women congratulating you on your 80th birthday celebration recently. Many of them described you as a mentor and a tutor. Were you surprised by that outpouring of love?
I’m still puzzled up till now as to how I can get all their contacts to reach out to every one of them. I’m amazed they came up with all the newspapers adverts – the trouble and the expenses. I’m really overwhelmed by their gestures. All I know is that in those days we worked together as one team. Everybody tried their best to do their bit. In the end, I want to believe, we achieved something for the state and particularly for the public service. We were proud of the public service that we had in Lagos State. We had a good heritage left by our bosses then;

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo once said that Nigeria is the only country where if you catch a thief red-handed, the thief will be the first to drag you to court. The above quote whose real author I couldn’t establish and Obasanjo’s characterisation of the Nigerian thief are spot on and speak to the Nigerian conundrum. The fact is that no one has captured the reality of Africa’s leadership challenge better than the two. Nothing depicts the tragedy of Africa, particularly Nigeria, more than the above quote. It tells the story of how Africans have underdeveloped Africa.
