MAIDUGUEI, Nigeria (AA): Nigerian military and police began operations to rescue hundreds of schoolgirls abducted from a boarding school early Friday in northwest Zamfara State, according to officials.
Governor Bello Mohammed said police and other security agencies are using surveillance aircraft in the rescue effort.
“Currently, police helicopters and other search and rescue operatives have been deployed to the area,” he said.
Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu also confirms the deployment of combat police.
Outcry and condemnations have come in the wake of the kidnapping of 317 schoolgirls early Friday at the Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe that was attacked by armed men, according to witnesses.

ANGRY residents of Jangebe in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State where 317 schoolgirls were kidnapped on Friday took to the streets and attacked all vehicles that passed through the village.
The villagers, including women and children, stormed the streets and used sticks and stones in carrying out their attacks.
The government and police authorities in the state confirmed the abduction of the students of the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS).
The abducted female students were taken to an unknown destination by armed gunmen who invaded the school in the early hours of Friday.
Two vehicles conveying newsmen from various media organisations were among vehicles that were attacked by the angry residents.

Bandits on Friday morning attacked Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Talata Mafara local Government Area of Zamfara State and abducted many students.
Report from Zamfara state said over 300 school girls were abducted.
According to BBC Hausa Service, the bandits attacked the secondary school in Talatar Mafara local government in the early hours of Friday.
The father of one of the abducted girls, who was identified as Alhaji Bello Maikusa Jangebe, said an unpleasant sound of guns had woken up the entire people in the town at around 1:30am Friday.
“We thought they had come to attack residents as they usually do, unfortunately, this time around, they aimed at the students and abducted about 327 of them, later we noticed that only a few of the students were left behind”, Maikusa narrated.
