forecasters say that a warming trend, thankfully, is come ohhing on wednesday. but until then, much of the country is seeing the coldest weather in 20 years. my colleague, my friend, stephanie elam, braving it in minneapolis. alexandria steele in the severe weather center to explain why this is happening. and stephanie, i ve got to start with you. i know what it s like to be out there when you re covering the cold weather and you can t talk. you re literally your mouth freezes and everything is frozen. how are you doing? yeah. i learned my lesson, suzanne. i m not going to take this thing off until it s time to talk. because i know i look like i m in a horror movie. but it is that cold out here. i ve never felt anything like this before. i ve never felt any kind of cold that is this deep. and it s just not the right way to describe it. we have checked in with the city to see how they re dealing with it. what s interesting, they said crime goes down when it gets cold, but when it ge
from minneapolis, victor blackwell monitoring from the south in atlanta. alexandria steele is checking the forecast from our severe weather center. and renee marsh in washington, d.c., checking the nation s airports. let s start with stephanie. stephanie, the temperatures well below zero. what is being done to reach a lot of these folks who may be in real danger from this weather? reporter: yeah. wolf, it actually feels like it s getting colder here. it s really it doesn t take long for the shivers to start setting in. we have been out here for maybe about five, seven minutes now, and already you can start feeling the chill come in, even though we have on so many layers. and what they have been doing we talked to the police department. they said they have been out patrolling, really looking for people who were in danger, who needed to get inside. taking them to hospitals, taking them to shelters, whatever they needed to do. they say crime has gone down a lot, because it s just so

fascinating literally for people on the ground. i thought that was good insight. let s get an early look at the weather with alexandria steele. good morning. hi, everyone. pretty quiet around the country. new york area airports will see low clouds and visibility and a slowdown for a little while. atlanta, chicago, much cooler, windy condition and lower visibility as well this morning. here s the forecast, what we ve got is this cold front moving through. behind it temperatures dropping off, a lot of the country, the southwest, the northwest, florida, warm conditions right along the eastern seaboard, still dry until that front makes it toward you later in the week. biggest changes, minneapolis, chicago, about ten degrees cooler than the past couple of days. the front has passed. the temperatures have dropped but the skies are clearing. 75 in washington. 78 in atlanta, georgia. the warmest spots in florida, sunny skies and 87. have a great day.
children spent the afternoon elsewhere and were fine. the mayor is thankful no one was killed. everyone that we know are safe and sound. there are some injuries. those folks were taken to the hospital and treated. well nebraska is not the only state hit hard. let s bring in alexandria steele. good morning, where else have we seen damage? 17 reports of tornados in three states. iowa was one of the biggest areas hit with a mile-wide tornado. let me show you some video. it was tornadoes part of the same system with snow. this is nebraska. poppy mentioned it, june is the biggest month for tornadoes. of course, it s spring but it s the clash of air masses whether it s spring or fall. it s that hot and cold coming together. so, they have had them before in october here. in 2001, there were 11. but obviously, certainly, it s rare for this time of year.
