Gun shop faces petition, possible new zoning in Newton

Wicked Local With a gun shop looking to open at 709 Washington St., next to Garden Remedies, a marijuana dispensary, many city councilors and upset residents are taking parallel steps to prevent this from happening. There are currently no restrictions on where a gun store can be located in Newton. Proposed zoning amendments were released on Friday, April 16. The City Council, which was due to meet on April 20, will likely refer these amendments to the Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAP) for a public hearing on May 10, according to the city’s Law Department. The proposed amendments “would only allow firearms sales related uses in certain zoning districts in the city,” according to an email from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller. They “will also require firearms sales uses to be approved by special permit by the City Council. Finally, it will create specific special permit criteria, including a buffer zone between a firearms dealer and residences and schools.”

Residents fight back against city s first gun store

Residents fight back against city’s first gun store     NEWTON, Massachusetts (WBZ) Washington Street in Newtonville is a bustling, commercial street. Lots of traffic. In the 700 block are a variety of shops, including a massage business and a pot shop. So when Newton Firearms quietly emerged, few people knew it. There is no big sign. Just a piece of paper taped to the door, saying to call for an appointment. We tried, with no luck. But then, word got out that Newton had its first gun shop and locals don’t seem too happy about it. “This is a densely populated community with young children and families that live around here so we don’t think it’s safe to put a gun shop here,” neighbor Adele Jasperse told WBZ-TV.

Mayor, Police: Newton gun shop on hold although appointments on offer

Wicked Local The city has halted a gun shop from opening – at least temporarily – after the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) on Tuesday issued a stop-work order. “It is clear from looking in the window … they are doing extensive work,” and haven’t pulled a permit from ISD, said Mayor Ruthanne Fuller about Newton Firearms at 709 Washington St. As of Friday, April 16, “a retail license [had] not come back from the state licensing agency yet,” said Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz. However, according to a sign on the door as well as a recording on the business line, customers can call or email and make appointments. Neither the sign nor the phone message indicates where the appointment would take place or what transaction might occur. Nobody answered the phone number listed on the website and sign on Tuesday morning.
