The COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious effect on people’s mental health and in one English village it even led to a murder. An inquest has recorded a verdict of unlawful death on parish councillor James Nash.
A mentally ill villager shot and beat his neighbour to death after convincing himself the man was working for Russian President Vladimir Putin and was helping him to spread the COVID-19 virus in Britain.
Alex Sartain, 34, used a home-made shotgun to shoot 42-year-old James Nash outside his cottage in Upper Enham, near Andover in the south of England on 5 August 2020.
A coroner has ruled that a man who killed a children’s author died following a police pursuit when he struck a tree at 145mph after taking cannabis.
Alex Sartain had attacked Cllr James Nash at his home in Upper Enham, near Andover, on August 5, 2020. Following this incident, Mr Sartain returned to his father’s workshop, before leaving on a motorbike and dumping weapons and blood-stained clothing by the side of the road. He was then found by a police helicopter, with a short pursuit taking place. However, Mr Sartain then “accelerated significantly” and officers lost track of him. Shortly afterwards, while taking a corner on the A343 at Doiley Hill, near Hurstbourne Tarrant, he clipped a car and lost control of his bike, hitting a tree at high speed.

A man who had just shot a children s author died in a motorbike crash as he fled police at speeds of up to 161mph, an inquest has heard.
Mr Sartain died later that day when he hit a tree in the pursuit on the A343 near Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire.
The coroner recorded a conclusion of death by road traffic collision.

Following the conclusion of the inquests into the deaths of both Cllr James Nash and Alex Sartain, the timeline of events which led to the tragic incident on August 5 which would see both men killed. Alex Sartain, who had a history of mental illness, attacked Cllr Nash at his home in Upper Enham; first shooting the councillor before repeatedly stamping on his head. Mr Sartain would later be involved in a police pursuit, and ended up crashing his motorbike at high speed on the A343 north of Hurstbourne Tarrant.
