And for U.S. Air Force TSgt. Lauren Brent, the time she s spent far away from home only makes her time back stateside all the more special.

Brent, a 2005 graduate of Grafton High School, deployed overseas to Saudi Arabia on October 4, 2020. Since then, her three children Jayden, Ava, and Camden have been staying with Brent s parents Terry and Donald Shannon in Yorktown.

For the first time in the calendar year, 13News Now embarked to the Ford to catch a glimpse of the ship s progress. The last embark came in November 2020, when the ship had completed roughly 70 percent of its Post-Delivery Tests and Trials and was performing its first fully-integrated carrier strike group operations.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Jefferson Avenue will forever be the street that changed Yvonne Carter s life.
On the night of Jan. 23, Newport News Police responded to reports of gunshots from the Southeast Community of the city. When officers arrived, they found 23-year-old Devon Carter had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Weeks later, Devon s killer is unknown, and so is the motive. Now, his mother is pleading with the public to come forward with answers.
“I was later showed a picture of him, and I identified my son. I could tell he had gunshot wounds to his head, and after that, I lost it, Yvonne said.
A historic Norfolk church has reopened its original doors, just in time for Christmas

NORFOLK, Va. For the first time in years, a historic church in Hampton Roads is once again holding Christmas mass in the place it’s always called home.
The congregation at The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception is currently America s only historically African-American Basilica, originally founded in 1791.
In 2016, the church began work on leaks and water damage within the building, with an initial budget of $120,000. Over time, Father Jim Curran has watched as issue after issue unfolded.
