New York Jets Flight Connections 5/7/21

Now that the NFL Draft is complete, it’s time to think about what remaining free agents the Jets should target prior to this season. Despite grabbing a lot of depth for the secondary in the draft, that position is still quite barren of playmakers. There’s a chance the Jets may stick with what they have, but a better route may be acquiring veteran players who can still make a difference on the field. Cornerbacks like Steve Nelson and Richard Sherman are still both available on the market, and either could make an impact on this Jets defense; albeit in different ways. Sherman can provide great leadership in a system he’s familiar with, while still playing at a great level. Nelson on the other hand is in his prime and played excellent when with the Pittsburgh Steelers the past tw

Michael Lombardi convinced 49ers altered draft plans due to outside pressure

2k Many felt the San Francisco 49ers were targeting Mac Jones of Alabama when they traded up to the No. 3 overall pick on March 26. They were wrong. Trey Lance of North Dakota State was the target, per general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. Jones was a safety net behind Lance and Justin Fields of Ohio State. At least, that is what we have been told since the draft. Shanahan started doing a deep dive into Lance s film in January, and the more he watched, the more he got excited. During his vacation in Cabo San Lucas, he spent time reviewing the young quarterback s film, sending his notes to Lynch, sometimes in the middle of the night. Shanahan liked Jones too and was fine drafting him at No. 12 their pre-trade draft slot. But Lance, on the other hand, was worth trading up to ensure the 49ers got their guy.

It’s the calm before the storm. Everyone has their top free agents the New York Jets should pursue. You know the names: Joe Thuney, Corey Linsley, Allen Robinson, Trey Hendrickson, etc. But what about the less prominent names? Chances are Joe Douglas will not be signing all the biggest names in free agency, and with the second most cap space in the NFL, chances are also that Joe Douglas will be signing a lot of free agents. Which means we should probably expect a fairly large class of role players and other under the radar signings. So let’s talk about this for a second. Who are your preferred role players and lesser known players to target in free agency?

Patrick Mahomes First Quarter Passing Numbers Are Pretty Crazy

Patrick Mahomes’ First Quarter Passing Numbers Are Pretty Crazy Alek Arend Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the AFC Championship Game. Patrick Mahomes picked apart the Tampa Bay secondary the first time the Chiefs and the Bucs met earlier this season. It’s a different story this evening. Mahomes finished the first quarter of Super Bowl LV with just nine(!) passing yards. Yes, you read that right. The Tampa Bay defense is playing lights out so far and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is a big reason why. The Bucs’ pass-rush has forced Mahomes out of the pocket and into uncomfortable throws (which is tough to do against a quarterback like Mahomes).
