Housing reform measure stalls - Evanston Now

A proposal to drop city rules that discriminate against non-family households failed to advance Wednesday night at a meeting of the Zoning Committee of the Plan Commission. The issue, which has been debated for years, was referred in September by Alderman Don Wilson, 4th Ward, to the Plan Commission. The commission in November referred it to the Zoning Committee. The committee Wednesday split, with member Peter Isaac favoring the change, Chair Jeanne Lindwall raising a variety of objections to it and member Kristine Westerberg uncertain about how to proceed. Two other committee seats are currently vacant.

Meeting called to order at 5:35 p.m. Alderman Judy Fiske, 1st Ward, not present at the start of the meeting, but arrived later. Mayor Steve Hagerty introduces Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Notes that County distributed $632K in federal COVID-19 funds to the city to help with pandemic-related costs and is working on additional aid. He also notes Housing Authority of Cook County mixed-income housing project at Emerson and Sherman. Preckwinkle says county balanced its budget without raising property taxes and also provided funding for equity programs.

Mayor says vaccinations are starting to move to Phase 1b, says the city doesn’t control how many vaccine doses the city gets, and typically has relatively little advance notice of the additional doses arriving. Says residents will be called for vaccination scheduling as doses become available.
