A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi suspended all his rallies in West Bengal, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced that his party would not hold any public rallies or campaign meetings for the ensuing Pipili bypoll.
BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced that his party will not hold any rally for the Pipili byelection, which has been rescheduled to May 13, following the death of Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj to avoid putting people’s life at risk of Covid-19.
Day after Rahul Gandhi suspended his rallies in West Bengal owing to the pandemic and Trinamool Congress announced that CM Mamata Banerjee won’t hold more rallies in Kolkata, Naveen tweeted, “Every life is precious and I always consider people of #Odisha as my family members. In this extremely serious #COVID19 situation amidst surge in cases in the country, @bjd odisha has decided not to hold any public rallies or campaign meetings in Pipili bypoll.”

The polling for the by- election to the Pipli assembly segment, which was countermanded following the death of Congress nominee Ajit Mangaraj, will be held on May 13, a senior official of the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) Office said.
Though the notification in this regard is yet to be published, only the Congress party will be allowed to replace its candidate, the official said on Saturday.
Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow the sale of Covid-19 vaccines in the open market so that people who can afford can purchase them. The state also demanded 25 lakh doses of vaccines immediately from the Centre.
The chief minister made the request at a time when Odisha and several other states are struggling to administer Covid-19 vaccines to all eligible people amid complaints of a shortage in supply from the Centre while the number of cases and deaths continue to mount.
During the last 24 hours, four persons died in Odisha due to Covid-19 with the total toll reaching 1,942. So far 364,594 people in the state have been affected by the virus with the detection of 3,144 fresh cases during the last 24 hours.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday requesting him to make the Covid-19 vaccine available in the open market as the state battles a vaccine shortage.
