Hurricanes finish 2nd in Pocahontas meet

The Mountain Home Hurricanes swim team returned to Pocahontas on Saturday and left with a second place finish. Jonesboro ended up winning the meet. For the Lady Hurricanes, Callie Kohler won the 50-yard freestyle in Junior Olympic time for girls ages nine and 10, and she also won the 25-yard butterfly and the 100-meter individual medley. Annabelle Horn won the 50-yard backstroke in Junior Olympic time for girls ages nine and 10, and she also took the 50-yard breaststroke. Joia Traver won the 100-yard freestyle, and she captured the 100-yard breaststroke for ages 15 to 18. Sierra Trogdon won the 100-yard backstroke, Alya Horn won the 100-yard breaststroke for ages 13 and 14, and Peeka Traver won the 200-meter individual medley.

Red Oak High School Hawk Theatre does Spelling Bee Broadway musical

By Patty Hullett For the Daily Light The Red Oak Hawk Theatre group presented the popular Broadway musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at the high school Performing Arts Center on May 21-23. This musical comedy, first performed in 2005, features music and lyrics by William Finn, based a book by Rachel Sheinkin, conceived by Rebecca Feldman, and with additional material by Jay Reiss. Red Oak High School’s version was led by Director Jericho Thomas, with music direction by Keith Lathrom, and assistant direction by ROHS senior Donae Swanson. This heart-warming musical was carried by a very talented group of students: Rona Lisa Peretti/Olive’s Mom as played by junior Jayden Douglas; Chip Tolentino/Dan Dad as played by junior Jose Moreno; Logainne Schwartzandgrunenierre as played by senior Avery Culpepper; Leaf Coneybear/Jesus Christ as played by freshman Omar Chavez; William Bartee as played by senior Landon Blanton; Marcy Park as played by senior Brooklynn

Disney to Adapt Broadway Show 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the 2019 live-action “Aladdin” for the studio, will produce via their Rideback banner. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce. The musical follows several competitors competing in a spelling bee. Composer William Finn’s musical opened on Broadway in 2005 and earned six Tony nominations while winning two: for Rachel Sheinkin’s book and for Dan Fogler’s featured performance. The show, which also included a pre-“Modern Family” Jesse Tyler Ferguson in its original cast, played for nearly three years and 1,100-plus performances on Broadway.
