Aviation Regulator DGCA Rules On Duty, Rest Hours For Air Traffic Controllers

The aviation regulator - Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) - has implemented Watch Duty Time Limitation (WDTL) and mandatory rest requirements for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) at 57 airports, according to an official statement.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed that air traffic controllers (ATCs) and five per cent of pilots and cabin crew on duty would undergo random breath analyser (BA) tests for the next three months in view of the prevailing pandemic. Justice Prathiba M Singh further directed the ATCs, pilots and cabin crew to give an undertaking that they have not consumed any alcohol or psychotropic substance within the 12 hours prior to a flight. It made it clear that if a pilot, cabin crew or ATC is found to have consumed such substances and had given a false undertaking, such personnel would be off-rostered and appropriate action would be taken against such individuals.
