to be knocking at their door, especially because the storm shifted eastward just hours before making landfall. we want to take you now to another area that saw an enormous surge of water, and that is arcadia, florida. near where hurricane ian made landfall where we find cnn s nadia romero. she is standing on a highway that looks like a river right now where supplies have been coming in and out all day. nadia, you were sharing with us when supplies got shipped, people picked them up. clearly they are in need of basic supplies. things like water. reporter: yeah. very basic necessities to just keep going. you can see behind me that people are in the water there. you can see people are in their air boats. they are making their way to the other side of this highway to get more of those supplies. water, fuel, mres.
want folks to come to the amphitheater to drop off supplies. if you take a look around on this side of the bend you can see air boats like this one that have been helping to get supplies across. we were told by locals there is a hospital on the other side of the river. usually, it would take about five minutes to drive through, but if you have to go all the way around, you re talking about over an hour to take that detour around flooded waters just to get that five-minute drive to the hospital. so they have had to load up people injured in the storm on these air boats, generators are loading up right now, to get on the other side of this water to get to the hospital. this is what people are dealing with. trying to get around, trying to find their way to simple resources they would have had access to. bor boris, a woman told me she heard hurricane ian, she said he sounded alive, that the storm growled and moaned and hung out
so it overtook those rvs that have now pushed out several feet from where they originally were. so the left side of your screen over here, there is a car that is submerged. people were trying to drive down the road here, they got stuck, and one neighbor mack martin told me they had to jump out of the truck and swim to safety. that was the last truck that tried it. everyone else realized that this was an impassable road and that is when the air boats came out and that is when the barricades finally came out. but when you dive out here in the when you drive out here, you can t see anything. so you have to rely on the barricades to let people know that you cannot make it past. that s right. and that is just exhibit a oig right there, why you don t drive your car into a flash flood because your car may be gone and you may be going behind too. and some kind of rescue boat is going behind you. the roads have been turned in to
private citizens, too, trying to help people. you can see the houses one after the other have become little islands about chest high, four or five feet height of water around some of these houses. first responders are joined by a lot of people who are bringing their air boats and private boats to help out and more aid from different parts of the state because some of the first responders have been going at it hard for several days and electricity still out for more than one million people. some of the buildings damaged so bad that you simply can t flip a switch and turn the electricity back on. jacqui, back to you. jacqui: all right, quite the scene there where you are, steve harrigan live for us, thank you so much, steve. we ll check with you later. griff: and hurricane ian leaving parts of the coastline battered. molly line is on polly s island where it caused flooding and washed away the polly s island
electricity and they are trying to just survive now. this is the peace river. locals tell me it is four times as high as it should be. the only way to get around is by boat or plane. that s what s happening here as people try to get themselves across. you re trying to get water across. you re trying to get fuel. and you re trying to get medical supplies. because on the other side of all of this water is a hospital that s up and running. we spoke with locals who say they saw people who were injured in the storm get loaded up on the air boats to get to the hospital to get some help. but people are in really good spirits. despite all that s going on, i want you to listen to one resident who says she believes they re lucky. we got hope and we ve got each other. we all survived, everyone, on our road. all the animals made it.
