Losses
Now the industry faces yet more losses because of the Brexit trade deal between the EU and UK that was settled last Christmas Eve.
That agreement averted the economic chaos that would have come with a no-deal Brexit. But the Irish fishing sector was quick to say its outsized burden was not acceptable. The deal will cut â¬43 million per year from the value of Irish fishing stocks by 2026, a 15 per cent cut from the value of the Stateâs 2020 quota. This is part of an arrangement in which European quota with a total value of â¬199 million moves to the UK from EU member states after Brexit.

Minister Charlie McConalogue meets Donegal County Council Fisheries Committee
Today, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal T.D., Charlie McConalogue, met with the Donegal County Council Fisheries Committee. The meeting allowed the Minister to hear at first hand the issues of concern and importance to the fishing sector in Donegal from Donegal County Councillors. The meeting was wide ranging and covered the impacts of the EU/UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement on fisheries, and supports for fishers, opportunities for investment in the industry including on local piers and harbours and Government plans for Marine Spatial planning.

The Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., today addressed the inaugural meeting of the Seafood Sector Taskforce, established by the Minister to make recommendations on measures to mitigate the impacts on the Irish Fishing industry, and on the coastal communities that depend on fisheries, of the fish quota share reductions arising from the EU/UK Trade & Cooperation Agreement.
Addressing the Taskforce, Minister McConalogue said, “The outcome of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement will lead to a loss of €43 million per year in fish quotas for our fisheries sector, with knock-on effects on marine support industries and our coastal communities. The quota reductions in some of our most important stocks will be felt immediately by our fishing industry when the full annual EU quotas for 2021
