UAE: Can my 10-day quarantine be deducted from annual leave?

Dubai: If you are returning from an international trip while on annual leave, will the subsequent quarantine be considered as part of your annual leave? This was the question raised by a Gulf News reader. He asked: “I am entitled to my annual leave every year as per UAE law. Last year I was forced by my company to take local leave due to the pandemic situation, which I agreed to as there was no choice. This year when I requested for my annual leave, they are claiming that the 10-day quarantine will be deducted from my annual leave, in which I am allowed to take only 20 days. My father is ill and I also need to be present at my child s christening. Also, due to the current situation my wife lost her job and I am taking them to India. So, I need my 30 days leave, to ensure that I can send them home happy and spend some precious time with my family. Please advise.”

UAE: Can I renegotiate a low basic salary?

Dubai: Signed a contract without paying attention to your salary breakdown? Employers in the UAE often provide a detailed breakdown of the salary that an employee will receive, which includes the basic salary along with allowances for housing, transport and communication. This is clearly mentioned in the employment contract that is signed by both the parties, and submitted to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). In the past few days, several Gulf News readers have written in with their queries regarding the salary breakdown offered by their employers, specifically with regards to their basic salary being a small percentage of their total take home package.

UAE: How low can my basic salary be, compared to total salary?

Dubai: Got a job offer in the UAE? Congratulations! While it can be an exciting time and you may want to get started quickly on your new work assignment, it is important to check your employment contract in detail before signing on the dotted line. One of the key elements of the work contract that need to be considered is the salary breakdown you receive. UAE employers provide employees with a total take home salary, which is broken down into various categories, like basic salary, transport allowance, housing allowance and more. A Gulf News reader wrote in, asking if the UAE Labour Law states how much the basic salary should be, compared to the total salary being paid to an employee.

UAE: My landlord refuses to return my security deposit What can I do?

Dubai: When moving out of an apartment, it is important to ensure that you hand back the unit to the landlord in good condition. Failing to do so can lead to losing your security deposit, in part or full. But what happens when you return the residential unit in perfect condition, but are still unable to get your deposit back? This was the query raised by a Gulf News reader. He said: “I m writing to share my harrowing experience in recovering my security deposit from my previous real estate company. In spite of handing over the unit as received, the company has failed to return my security deposit of Dh4,500. I have been following up with them since October 2020 via email and Whatsapp and have personally visited their office on multiple occasions, but in vain. They simply declined to return the amount or even have a discussion.”
