Equity indices trade in range; auto stocks tumble

Benchmarks traded sideways with a negative bias in mid-morning trade. At 11:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 32.52 or 0.07% at 46,928.01. The Nifty 50 index declined 17.8 points or 0.13% at 13,742.95. In broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down 0.17% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.09%. The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was almost even. On the BSE, 1351 shares rose and 1363 shares fell. A total of 139 shares were unchanged. On Friday, Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 2,720.95 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs), were net sellers to the tune of Rs 2,424.61 crore, provisional data showed.

The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index tumbled 3% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 2.95%. Sellers outnumbered buyers. On the BSE, 713 shares rose and 2,230 shares fell. A total of 153 shares were unchanged. COVID-19 Update: Total COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide stood at 7,68,23,486 with 16,93,205 deaths. The Nifty 50 index slipped 96.55 points or 0.70% at 13,664. The selling was broad based. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.87%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 0.73%. Sellers outnumbered buyers. On the BSE, 1,085 shares rose and 1,779 shares fell. A total of 155 shares were unchanged. In Nifty 50 index, 13 stocks advanced while 37 stocks declined. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 2,720.95 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs), were net sellers to the tune of Rs 2,424.61 crore in the Indian equity market on 18 December 2020, provisional data showed.

Barometers trade with modest losses; IT stocks trade firm

Benchmark indices were hovering near the day s low with modest losses in early afternoon trade. Banks and auto shares declined while IT shares bucked weak market trend. At 12:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, fell 78.04 points or 0.17% at 46,882.65. The Nifty 50 index slipped 25.05 points or 0.18% at 13,735.50. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.23% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 0.03%. The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1,310 shares rose and 1,488 shares fell. A total of 154 shares were unchanged. Derivatives: The NSE s India VIX, a gauge of market s expectation of volatility over the near term, jumped 4.65% to 19.49. The Nifty December 2020 futures were trading at 13,737, at a premium of 11.20 points compared with the spot at 13,725.80.
