First, my story of the week, hope and Climate Change. I will admit, as i watch the president s inaugural address on monday morning, i was definitely not expecting this. We will respond to the threat of Climate Change. Knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires and crippling drought. And more powerful storms. The path toward Sustainable Energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But america cannot resist this transition. We must lead it. Youll recall with the exception of a single line in his dnc speech, our current state of climate peril was barely mentioned in the campaign. In fact, it was the first time in 24 years it was never raised at any of the debates. So, i was not the only commentator who was surprised to find such a passionate, lengthy passage in his speech. A speech, of course, is just that. Often we have a tend
Manufacturing jobs. And Infrastructure Bank. With me on the podium is the chairman of the policy committee. Who Will Champion the infrastructure which the president mentioned a few minutes ago. We need to facilitate the efficient, private Sector Investment and infrastructure. We need to compete from broadband systems. With an Infrastructure Bank, we will be able to outbuild a partnership between the Public Sector and private sector. Clean energy. Clearly, that is the future. That is the vision we have of an america that has powered itself by clean energy. We need to invest in clean energy to create jobs and make america competitive in the most important, new economic sector. China is doing that. Europe is doing that. America must do that. It is doing it as a result of a bill we passed, the american recovery and reinvestment act. We need to continue on that path. Currency reforms. Under democratic leadership, we pass a bipartisan bill that sought to level the Playing Field by Holding Ac
Businesses get it and now how important it is for the vitality of america and endorsed by the aflcio, so labor understands it also. We thank both labor and Business Community for supporting the immigration bill. [applause] so, nick, youve been involved in ufcw, packing house workers and stuff, and its been my experience as i toured them, and i didnt work in them like durbin did. He was a meat cutter in packing houses, but as ive traveled around, i see more and more of the Latino Community working in our packing houses and meat cutting places you represent. Tell us about that. Im with local cw222 from northwest iowa. We have a packing house in cherokee, iowa, and dakota city, nebraska. Too together, thats roughly close to 5,000 employee, and 75 of them are latino. 75 . Yes, yes, so 75 of the membership who we represent are latino and imMigrant Workers, so, again, good morning, ladies and gentlemen, of the panel and audience, senators, im honored to be here to talk about an issue that af
We will also hear from president obama, who signed the deficit reduction measure into law, part of the deal to raise the debt ceiling. First, Senate Majority leader harry reid and republican Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell will talk on the senate floor about the january fiscal deadline. Since our country voted to return president obama to the white house, i have spoken often about compromise. I remain optimistic that, when it comes to our economy, when it comes to protecting middleclass families from a whopping tax hike, republicans and democrats will be able to find common ground. President dwight eisenhower, a republican, once said, people talk about the middle of the road as though it were unacceptable. There have to be compromises. The middle of the road is all usable space. So said white house and higher. Dwight eisenhower. Too often, we face off, not realizing that the solution rests somewhere in the middle. I remind everyone of one fact. This congress is one vote away from avoid
