reporter: all of these options are thorny. if they go to another round of balloting, it s not clear i would be surprised if mccarthy were able to peel off the number of people that he needs from this 20 no vote coalition on his side to actually become speaker on this next ballot. what we are hearing is that the mccarthy team could go for a motion to adjourn until tomorrow. you are right, that would buy them time. it would save them another round of embarrassment if he were to lose on this fourth ballot. as i was walking over here, i tried to find some key members of that 20 no vote coalition to ask if they would support that motion to adjourn. right now, democrats have said they will not represent republicans do that. they are whipping against that motion. republicans would have to go it alone. they would not be able to pass that motion to adjourn unless some of these 20 republicans were also on board and supportive of it. i talked, for example, with congressman andy bigg
hi there, everyone, here we go again. it s 4:00 in new york. at this hour, the house of representatives is completely and totally paralyzed. it is unable and incapable of swearing in members, forming committees, setting rules for itself, passing legislation even in the case of an emergency, couldn t do any of those things. it s a state of chaos and paralysis that is unprecedent ed in modern american history and it is all because the new republican house majority cannot agree on who should lead it in the 118th congress. house gop leader kevin mccarthy has moved into the speaker s office already, appears to be living by the motto, if at first you don t succeed try, try, try, try, try, try again. he has now lost five votes for the speakership, a sixth vote is underway. it s already clear from the math that mccarthy doesn t have the votes to become speaker of the house of representatives this time either. democrats for their part quietly made history yesterday by choosing the fir

In check, cant pass legislation, cant keep a speaker, theres got to be a better way. Except it isnt an infomercial and there doesnt seem to be a better way because House Republicans have a Governing Majority so narrow, it is doubtful theres anyone in the gop who can get away with disregarding the most extreme elements of the party. In other words, someone who can pass legislation without being held hostage by the likes of matt gaetz. A budget, which is coming due in a quick 31 working days. There is, of course, one option. A coalition government, led by someone dedicated to working with the middle. Someone who can get votes from both parties, thereby neutering people like matt gaetz. Former speaker Kevin Mccarthy sort of did that with the debt ceiling. Then again over the weekend to pass the 45day Stopgap Budget Measure is coming to the reality of a divided government, which is that there is literally no passable legislation that is not bipartisan. Why does that sound so crazy . Even i
