The Grain War and Global Food Crisis: From the Black Sea to the Middle East

Russia’s war against Ukraine is the largest military conflict Europe has seen since World War II, with 15 million people displaced and thousands of civilian casualties. Russia has waged a war of destruction not just against Ukraine, but also against the world. For months Moscow has prevented the export of Ukrainian grain that countries in the Middle East and Africa depend on. Half of the World Food Programme’s grain comes from Ukraine, meaning the Russian blockade has affected international humanitarian relief efforts.

The Independent: "What is a humanitarian no-fly zone and could it save lives in Ukraine?"

Iulia-Sabina Joja, director of the Middle East Institute’s Afghanistan Watch programme and a professor of at Georgetown University, was not among those who signed the letter, but she told The Independent she backed the move. She said the humanitarian mission would seek to create a safe zone in the west of Ukraine, but acknowledged the situation of pitting nuclear armed nations against each other in conventional combat was unprecedented.

The UN, climate, and security

On Dec. 13, 2021 at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, a draft resolution that would have recognized climate change as a security threat was rejected. The resolution, co-sponsored by Niger and Ireland, would have incorporated climate change as a security risk within the U.N. framework of conflict prevention strategies. What are the potential implications of this and what comes next? We asked seven experts to weigh in with their thoughts.

Climate Change and Security Implications in the Mediterranean

Home to more than 0.5 billion people, the Mediterranean region is warming 20% faster than the global average. Consequently, the projected impacts of climate change in this region include further aridity and drought, frequent wildfires, and significant sea level rise. Additionally, hotspots of climate migration may appear as early as 2030, as both coastal and inland communities are facing additional pressure on food security. Historically, the Mediterranean region is also home to multilayered spheres of influence, driven by numerous economic, political, and military dimensions.
