top of the hour, this busy thursday morning, i m jim sciutto. i m poppy harlow. welcome to our viewers. the breaking news we are following this morning, hurricane ian leaving just stunning devastating destruction in florida as a hurricane then a tropical storm. still pummeling the state though. 14 million people in florida are currently under flood alerts. 2.5 million businesses without power along with homes. they re rescuing people trapped inside flooded homes. governor ron desantis spoke about the devastation so many are waking up to this morning. there s 1.5 million outages in 7 southwest florida counties. lee and charlotte are basically off the grid at this point. the amount of water that s been rising and will likely continue to rise today even as the storm is passing is basically a 500-year flood event. the impacts of this storm are historic. and the damage that was done has been historic and this is just off initial assessments. well, the risk of storm surge and
florida that often does not see hurricanes of this magnitude and the process of intensification is something we need to highlight because it was just yesterday morning that this was a tropical storm. it became a hurricane, category 2, category 3, even category 4, before weakening a bit as it made landfall in florida. now it remains a category 1. even as it leaves florida, the danger still lurks. just to put a button on it. the last time that big bend area saw hurricane-force winds like this, this type of strength was 125 years ago. that really just gives you a sense of just how historic the storm has been. let s stay in the big bend area. two residents who evacuated from horseshoe beach describing the situation at their home. they spoke with cnn affiliate wjxt. take a listen. when did you come here to evacuate? yesterday, when they gave us orders. the cops came door to door.

jacksonville saying there s multiple fatalities. she told our affiliate wjxt that the shooter barricaded himself inside of a dollar general on kings road. that is in the grand park area just west of the downtown area. it is not clear if these victims were shot inside or outside of the store. i want to put on a quick soundbite from councilwoman jacoby pittman. here s what she said about what the shooter is doing to the community. i am very, very angry right now. i m emotional. we ve got kids in this community seeing all of this. and this is unnecessary, you know. it s unjust that we can t even walk on the sidewalks. we re not safe in any stores.
