Mercado Popular is a pop-up market and neighborhood farm store in Hartford, located at 111 Allyn Street, in one of the empty, street-level retail spaces below the Hartford Carriage House apartments. The Hartford residents behind the concept, Jocelyn Cerda and Elijah Patterson, are sourcing produce, eggs, dairy products and grains from farmers in the region, as well as other homemade and hand-crafted goods from Hartford-based small businesses, like jewelry, body products, candles, coffee, and macrame. The biweekly farm store is open from 12-4 p.m. on Feb. 27, March 13 and March 27. The co-founders hope to continue this effort more permanently.
SAN DIEGO
More than a dozen residents gathered Friday to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with an annual wreath-laying ceremony.
The celebration was held in Broadway Heights, a small residential neighborhood in southeastern San Diego, along Martin Luther King Jr. Way promenade, which is lined with photos of civil rights leaders and passages from King’s speeches.
Organizers said paying tribute to King’s legacy was timely given the racial justice protests throughout last year and ongoing division in the nation.
“This is what he talked about years ago . how we all should be free,” said Robert Robinson, president of the Broadway Heights Community Council, while listening to a reenactment of King’s “I Have A Dream” speech on Friday.
