LEESBURG More than 200,000 people have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines in Lake and Sumter counties, based on Sunday’s county update from the Florida Department of Health.
Of the 202,347 who have received a dose of the Moderna, Pfizer, or Johnson & Johnson vaccine in Lake and Sumter counties since the state began its vaccination program in December, 126,369 were in Lake and 75,978 were in Sumter.
All told, 132,181 of those vaccinated, including 77,604 in Lake and 54,577 in Sumter, completed the two-shot series Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, or the single-dose vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson through Saturday – the latest information contained in Sunday’s update. The majority in Lake and Sumter counties – 74,620 in Lake and 51,349 in Sumter – received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.
LEESBURG – Four Lake County residents who tested positive for COVID-19 are among the latest-reported deaths attributed to the coronavirus, according to Monday’s update from the Florida Department of Health.
The latest-reported fatalities raise the area’s COVID-related death toll to 835, including 593 in Lake and 242 in Sumter.
Details about many recent local deaths have not been immediately available, due to a change in the way the DOH reports fatalities on its website. DOH offices in Tallahassee and in Lake County did not respond to emails seeking information.
However, based on guidance provided by the CDC, deaths are considered COVID-19 related if doctors, medical examiners or coroners determine the coronavirus was a primary or contributing factor. To help with that determination, a COVID-19 test can be given posthumously, especially if a person had not been tested prior to death.
