Lenawee County firefighters fundraising for memorial

The Daily Telegram ADRIAN  The tragic line-of-duty death of firefighter Joe Gallo in November has revived efforts by local firefighters to create a firefighters memorial similar to the police memorial at Oakwood Cemetery.  The fundraising effort is spearheaded by firefighter Jeff Betz, a member of the Adrian and Madison Township fire departments, along with Blissfield Township Fire Chief Dale Fruchey. Gallo was a part of the fire departments in Blissfield and Madison townships.  Betz said in an interview that efforts to establish a memorial were attempted in the past but all fizzled out for various reasons.  Betz, who served as a full-time firefighter with Adrian and Madison Township from 1979 until his retirement from full-time firefighting in 2016, had already studied line-of-duty deaths in the Adrian Fire Department for its 175th anniversary in 2016. This included making a plaque with their names and the firefighters’ last alarm.
