orleans, louisiana. is this one leak or more than that, phil? reporter: we ve got four. a total of four leaks that involve methane gas bubbles, as well as a little bit of oil. the four locations are one, about two or 3 miles away from the well, that s been determined not to be related to the mconda well, another series of bubbles have been spotted two or 300 feet from the bell of the well, also at the base of the blowout preventer and as admiral thad allen nuns dollars the gaskets of the capping sack. when you first see bubble, eventually you re going to see oil, and the biggest fare is that this cap is building the pressure downward, and outward, so that could potentially force oil and methane gas to explode elsewhere in the seafloor. but at this point, with the size and the seas being what they are, admiral allen says the risk now appears to be minimal. we do not believe this is consequential at this time but it is the collective opinion of the folks talking about this that the
integrity test they ve been doing has really interfered with their ability to collect oil. and i think that s one of the issues here. bp is not wanting to produce the well, for obvious reasons of being able to measure the flow, and the government, as am i, am worried about the integrity of the wellhead and further leaks around the well and in the wellhead itself. now, admiral allen is representing us, representing the government in this project with bp. he is not an oil man. 100 days ago, he probably knew absolutely, probably knew as much about this as i did. which is to say absolutely nothing. and so how do you imagine the dialogue going between experienced bp engineers and executives, using terminology, talking about tek technology they ve worked with that allen has never been around. what is his bail to sift through the truth, the risk factors in the various choices, the various options in front of him. i ve watched admiral allen develop over this last couple of
ending his shift on the rig april 16th. four days later, eleven workers died. as for the well itself, how many total leaks are we aware of or they re admitting to. exactly. we know of four. these are oil as well as methane gas bubbles. one two or three miles away from the well ruled out as being connected. a bubble seep is 2 or 300 feet away. another one is under the blowout preventer. there s a leak coming from underneath the cap which apparently is not 100% tight fitting. since the pressure continues to rise slowly but continues to raise, bp as well as the science team advising admiral allen believe it s not posing a risk and will keep the cap on. phil keating, thank you very much, we ll see you later.
