They were lovely. It is lovely to be back here. First time since my last book as david got across the carla and barbara who are always very welcoming to me. I have to tell you publishers and authors crawl and scratch to speak at this place. But they always say you are on to me and it is lovely. Brad and melissa have carried on the tradition that carl began with the energy and all of you coming tonight is a testimony to the job they do and the reverence for books that we all share. Richard nixon is a hard man to let go of. I remember as a child in black and white fuzzy television seeing this odd man on the ticket for Vice President and there was a problem of him taking money from a secret fund. He was talking about his daughters dog and i thought he is interesting. He never stopped being interesting. Richard nixon was never boring. He was probably as interesting in his afterpresidency as he was during his presidency. I chronicle in the book the beginning with sparrow agnew being in trou
The one that ended his presidency when it did surface because they did do a cover up. How to that 18. 5 minute gap happened. It is pretty clear from the expert panel that there was an intentional situation. And i decided to put an appendix who had access, the fact that there were five to nine who intentionally erase the content. It occurs on a tape on june 20, 1972 which is his first day back in the office. It is his first conversation after the arrest. And i think it is very flexible. Its something because of the timing of when this comes up that again shows his defense that he knew nothing about until march 21 is alive. But it is ironic that more conversations that same week occurred, this happened to be one and he had to flush it out and that is when they decided to erase it. I also included everyone who had access to that tape at that time and it runs with some people that are wellknown, some that are still alive. When was the taping system and play in the white house . No, it wasn
And of course these naturalization ceremonies represent a proud day, not just for these new americans but for all americans and for our nation as a whole where we welcome new citizens with open arms to this country to find a better life for themselves and their family and in the process for all of us. But the president has now threatened and hes the one who has made the threat. He said if you dont do it on my timetable, according to the terms i prefer, im going to do it myself. He said that time and time again, and there is no president who has abused the authority to issue executive orders more than the current occupant of the white house. All president s have issued executive orders since george washington, but no one has held congress and the constitution in such contempt that they feel Like Congress is irrelevant except when i need them to appropriate money or help them serve my purposes. But the president is going to take steps in the coming days that would send men and women like
Our statutory authority. Increasingly we are finding ourselves unable to read what we find or unable to open a new device. That is serious. I think encryption is a good thing. I think there are tremendous societal impacts to encryption. Not only lock your cars, but you should encrypt things that are important to you. We have a collision in this country getting closer and closer to a head on, which is our important interest in privacy and our important interest in public safety. The logic of universal encryption is inexorable, that our authority under the fourth amendment, and amendment i think is critical to liberty and the right oversights to obtain information is going to become increasingly irrelevant. As all of our lives become digital, the logic of encryption is all of our lives will be covered by encryption. Terrorists and spies will be in a place that is utterly unavailable to courtordered process. That i think should be very concerning. I think we need to have a conversation ab
Would. Out 1st ladies he paid nothing. There is clearly not equal pay in the white house but before i wanted to make sure we michelle get paid is much as she could. I want a big paycheck from michelle. That was in a womens issue. That made us able to pay the bills. While what i want my spouse her daughter is not paid . That does make any sense. We will keep on pushing into labeled goes on. I i would like to see some hands from people in the audience. Please stand up. Yeah. [inaudible conversations] i think we can hear you. Are you guys hearing about your . Why dont we work on that mike. Hold on a 2nd. It stretches. [laughter] i, mr. President. It is an hour to me you. My question my question is 1st of all, i believe that the key to Economic Growth and the key to any cycle of poverty i think what can the government do on a federal level to increase wages and teachers . Traditionally and stereotypically a female profession. My husband is a a Public School teacher. I am a blogger. Our bus
