Govt, farmers agree on 2 out of 4 key issues; next meeting on Jan 4 By IANS|   Updated: 31st December 2020 7:29 am IST New Delhi, Dec 31 : In a development that has been termed “positive”, the sixth round of meeting between the protesting farmers and the Central government ended after over five hours with the Centre saying that the two sides had reached consensus on two out of four key issues. The next meeting will take place on January 4. The meeting started around 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday at Vigyan Bhavan with Tomar, Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal and Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash heading the government side.

(PTI) NEW DELHI: A day before the next round of talks, protesting farmers unions took a hard stand and wrote to the Centre tightly ring-fencing the discussion scheduled to take place on Wednesday. In their letter to the government on Tuesday, the farmers unions wrote that the discussion will only be on the modalities of repealing the three farm legislations, giving a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price, and on two other issues they proposed earlier this week.

During the discussions, the government told the farmer leaders that a committee could be formed to deliberate on the farmers’ demands regarding the three farm laws. The next meeting will take place on January 4. “Today s talks were held in a very good environment & it concluded on a positive note. Consensus on 2 out of 4 issues was reached between both sides,” Union Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar said after the meeting.

The deadlock between protesting farmers and the Centre was broken on Wednesday with the latter conceding two of their four key demands removal of penalty provision in the Commission for the Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas Ordinance, 2020, and scrapping of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill. The two main issues related to legalising MSP and withdrawing three farm laws were still under discussion, with the next round of talks scheduled for January 4.
