Reporter on i was inside for the News Conference when mayor ed lee explained he met with police chief sir this morning following Fatal Shooting of a black woman in the Bay View District by a police sergeant. As you said the mayor said he asked the police chief to resign and that is exactly what the police chief did. Chief greg sir has been with the San Francisco Police Department for 33 years. He was elected chief in 2011. Now the mayor said the city has been shaken and divide over tension between Law Enforcement and community of color for several months now. He said even though the Police Department has been moving toward reform especially in terms of the use of force policy things not moving quickly enough and that new leadership was needed. Our interests are common and clear. I think its important to recognize again that turkey has been an invaluable member of nato, still is. We have a nato base there. We have a lot going on with turkey as do other nato countries. So their interests are clear and they understand that in this fight. Many of the members of this committee talked about the effectiveness of arming the moderate rebels. The senator had a line of questioning about what agreements do they have with them . There have been certain questions about what information the moderates may have given to isil about their son. So im concerned about how we assess their abilities, their effectiveness, how we can when i met some of these opposition fighters the last time i was overseas, they wouldnt even agree to locking down and securing chemical weapons when found and turning them over to an international body. How can you engage them . How can you truly vette them . How can we have any hope that if they do agree to fight isil
In the United States i am sure you are very aware that we are in the midst of significant budget battles and dysfunctions one might say, and for those of us who watched defense we are particularly the implications of that for u. S. Defense strategy and planning. Im wondering how you would describe the cuts in defense in canada. I dont think you have quite the political environment we do right now but surely you must have the same sense of general interest in how canada plans to go forward and again strategically where canada wants to be in terms of its role in the world and how to underwrite that with military capability. I would love to hear a little bit about the efforts underway in canada including your own defense reform initiative. That looks to cut inefficiencies to free up some funds.
