Sir Hilary visits, praises team at research centre

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles heard first-hand from scientists at the University’s Seismic Research Centre (UWI–SRC) about their months of treacherous work and experience, when he visited Saint Vincent and the Grenadines last Friday.
Vice-Chancellor Beckles was briefed by the scientific team, led by Volcanologist, Dr Adam Stinton on its monitoring and advising on the La Soufrière volcano, which has been critical to the Government in preparing for, managing and now recovering from the volcano’s eruption.

He made the point during NBC Radio’s
Eyeing La Soufriere program this morning.
Dr. Stinton said the Monitoring Team is continuing to observe steaming and gas venting from the volcano and while this continues, it is considered unsafe for persons to return to live in some areas of the Red Zone to live.
He also said the Monitoring Team is preparing to repair and re-install equipment which was damaged during the explosive eruption and once this process is complete, they would be able to provide better coverage of the Volcano.

Seismic activity but no eruption
Dr. Adam Stinton, Head of the La Soufrière Monitoring Team, dispelled the rumour of an eruption on Tuesday night.

Head of the La Soufrière Monitoring Team, Volcanologist Dr. Adam Stinton, has confirmed that there has been no recent eruption of the La Soufrière volcano.
Speaking on NBC radio on Wednesday, Dr. Stinton said that contrary to a WhatsApp message in circulation, I can categorically say there was no eruption at the volcano on Tuesday night.”
He did confirm, however, that there were some seismic activities overnight and that the volcano continued to be in a state of unrest with continuous steaming and emission of gas.
