Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department revises use-of-force policies

When: East Petersburg Borough Council meeting, May 4, in person. What happened: Police Chief David Steffen told Borough Council that Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Department was certified by the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. That means the police department is required to meet about 139 standards that agencies strive to uphold; practices are assessed by the state annually to ensure policies are being followed. The department also revised its use-of-force protocols and is reviewing best practices in responding to calls with mental health issues. Why it’s important: The measures are intended to hold the police department accountable to operate with integrity, honesty and compassion. Steffen said the public can be assured officers and staff seek “transparency and professionalism” in their work.

East Petersburg to replace traffic signal at routes 72, 772

When: East Petersburg Borough Council meeting, April 6. What happened: The borough will replace the traffic signal at the heavily traveled intersection of routes 72 and 772. Details: The traffic signal installation will consist of a new pedestal pole, a lighted pedestrian signal, a pedestrian push button and sign and an underground electrical junction box. What’s next: Construction easement agreements must be entered into between the borough and the owners of private property at the intersection including Gargano’s Restaurant, Fulton Bank and Teaman Martin Insurance. Gargano’s will receive $175 for the permanent easement representing approximately one hour of attorney’s fees.
