Ahead Of Christmas, A 3-Year Prison Sentence In Fatal Drunken Driving Crash

/ A 2007 Lexus driven by Adam Mandel, 19, is seen after crashing into a guardrail on W. University Avenue in Gainesville on January 9, 2020. The passenger in the car, Kassandra Guzman-Ramirez, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mandel is facing a civil suit and a criminal investigation following the crash. He told the judge in a court filing – despite his record of speeding tickets and accidents – that the crash was an isolated incident and that he felt remorse over the death of his girlfriend. Days before Christmas, a former University of Florida student with a history of bad driving has begun serving a three-year prison term for the drunken, high speed crash that killed his girlfriend nearly one year ago.

University of Florida student sentenced to three years in DUI crash

A University of Florida student who was drunk while driving in a January car crash that caused his girlfriend’s death has pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter.  Adam Mandel was sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years probation in exchange for his guilty plea. The maximum prison sentence for that charge is 15 years, according to court records.  Witnesses who saw the Jan. 9 crash gauged Mandel was driving between 60 and 80 miles an hour in the 2500 block of West University Avenue and passed a driver in a no-passing lane, court records show. He lost control of his 2007 Lexus and crashed into a utility pole. Mandel’s girlfriend, 20-year-old Kassandra Guzman-Ramirez, died at the site.
