A University of Florida student who was drunk while driving in a January car crash that caused his girlfriend’s death has pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter.
Adam Mandel was sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years probation in exchange for his guilty plea.
The maximum prison sentence for that charge is 15 years, according to court records.
Witnesses who saw the Jan. 9 crash gauged Mandel was driving between 60 and 80 miles an hour in the 2500 block of West University Avenue and passed a driver in a no-passing lane, court records show. He lost control of his 2007 Lexus and crashed into a utility pole. Mandel’s girlfriend, 20-year-old Kassandra Guzman-Ramirez, died at the site.
