Election changes spurred by COVID-19 may become permanent

AUGUSTA  Legislation supported by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows that would make permanent many of the innovative measures the State put in place for voting during the pandemic passed in the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee by a 5-4 vote, with four members absent. The bill, LD 1363 An Act To Amend the Laws Governing Elections, was sponsored by Sen. Louis Luchini, D-Ellsworth, on behalf of Secretary Bellows. “We ve heard from Maine voters and local election officials that many of the changes enacted in 2020 to protect health, safety, and access to the ballot were beneficial, and were excited to continue them in future elections,” said Secretary Bellows. “Maine has a long history of leading the way on conducting free and fair elections with robust participation, and LD 1363 keeps us on that path.”

AUGUSTA  The Maine Senate enacted Wednesday a bill from Senator Dave Miramant, D-Camden assisting the lobstering industry.  The bill, LD 338, “An Act To Amend the Law Governing the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative,” would extend funding for the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative so they can more freely advocate for the lobstering industry. LD 338 extends funding for the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative, which was due to end this year, and makes license surcharges ongoing at their current level. “Lobstering is a cornerstone of both our heritage as well as our tourist economy here in Maine,” said Sen. Miramant. “This bill eases some restrictions for the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative as they work to advertise our lobster and increase demand for Maine lobster. We should be doing all we can to maintain this storied industry of our state and our economy. I’m grateful that my colleagues voted to enact this bill.”
